Three names, different design choices

WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2/IPsec describe different approaches to establishing protected connections. Which one makes sense depends on support, configuration, and the environment in which you use it. Begin with the current recommendation from your provider or administrator rather than an old settings screenshot.

Read the primary references

The official WireGuard overview explains cryptokey routing and the boundary of the core protocol. The OpenVPN 2.6 manual documents that implementation's settings. The IETF IKEv2 specification, RFC 7296 describes the protocol's role with IPsec. These references support the distinctions above; they are not endorsements of a commercial VPN operator.

Compare behavior on your equipment

Start with a non-critical task on a known connection. Observe the initial connection, ordinary activity, sleep and wake, and a permitted network change. Change one documented option at a time. A test that also changes the device and endpoint is difficult to interpret.

Do not declare a universal winner from one download. A call, game, or file transfer places different demands on the connection. Use the gaming and latency article to distinguish responsiveness from throughput, and describe uncertainty when your observations are inconsistent.

Keep provider trust on a separate checklist

The protocol does not select an operator's logging policy. Evaluate data-handling explanations, ownership, and relevant evidence independently. A useful implementation can still be offered by a service whose policies do not meet your requirements.

Choose a configuration you can explain

A supported default that works predictably is usually a better starting point than a collection of unexplained changes. When a problem appears, identify it precisely and try a documented alternative only when it addresses that problem. Keep a note of the change and how to reverse it.
