What is a VPN, in plain English?

A typical personal VPN sends selected traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a provider’s endpoint. The traffic then continues to its destination. Read how a VPN works to understand where that tunnel starts and ends.

Does a VPN make me anonymous?

No. A changed public IP address does not remove account sign-ins, cookies, or other identifiers. A VPN also introduces an operator you need to evaluate. Our online privacy guide separates those different boundaries.

Do I always need a VPN on public Wi-Fi?

Not every shared-network task requires the same tools. HTTPS already protects correctly established website connections. A trusted VPN may add a useful boundary for selected traffic, but it does not replace destination checks or account security. See public Wi-Fi precautions.

Which VPN protocol should I choose?
