How to Choose a VPN Without Falling for the Hype
Build a decision checklist around your needs, provider transparency, practical testing, and understandable pricing.

Separate network visibility, website identity, account protection, and device security. One tool does not do every job.

“Private browsing” can mean several things. You may want fewer people to observe the network path, fewer accounts connected to an activity, or fewer unnecessary permissions on a device. State the concern before choosing the tool. A single privacy label is too broad to tell you which boundary has changed.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation's VPN guide explains why a VPN is not complete anonymity and why the provider still matters. It is a useful starting point for understanding the difference between limiting local network visibility and preventing a website from recognizing you.
The network path: a VPN can change the route of selected traffic and add an encrypted tunnel to its endpoint. That endpoint has an operator. Evaluate that operator rather than treating the tunnel as a removal of all trust.
The website connection: HTTPS protects the browser-to-website connection when correctly established. It does not certify the honesty of the website owner. A VPN and HTTPS have different endpoints and should not be treated as interchangeable.
The account: signing into a familiar service identifies the account being used. A different public IP address does not erase that relationship. Consider account security and recovery independently of the connection route.
The device: applications, permissions, local files, and physical access matter. A VPN cannot make an already exposed document disappear or decide whether a request to share it is appropriate.
Begin with the accounts and applications you actually use. Check how you sign in, where recovery information is kept, and which devices are authorized. Review unnecessary browser extensions and permissions through the platform's current controls. Make one deliberate change at a time so you can explain the result.

One extreme is believing that a VPN fixes every privacy problem. The other is believing it has no purpose because it does not fix everything. A better question is whether the tool changes the specific exposure you care about in a way you understand.
For example, choosing a trusted endpoint for traffic on an unfamiliar network and signing into a personal calendar can both be deliberate choices. There is no need to pretend that the calendar no longer knows which account is in use.
